TECHNOLOGY for Outreach mentors 8th grade students at St. Joan of Arc School.
TECHNOLOGY for Outreach sponsored the St. Joan of Arc School in Evanston, Illinois in an online technology competition for middle school and high school students. The contest was presented by NSTEP TechXplore and required that each participating team develop ways to use new or existing technology to solve an everyday problem.
The students sought to solve the problem of having to move to a separate area in the classroom or school in order to use personal computers. For them, this was not only an inconvenience but also a hindrance to their learning because it often interrupted their thought process. From this, the group developed The TRUdesk. The TRUdesk is a school student desk with a personal computer, monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers and DVD ROM built-in. The flat screen monitor lies flat under a glass surface and there doesn’t take away valuable desktop space. Since the computer is built into their everyday desk, they will no longer have to leave to use it.
“This was an outstanding group of 8th graders. I can’t stress enough how impressed I was with the kids at St. Joan of Arc School. They are so bright and know a lot about today’s technologies.”
